EU shipping, IOSS and customs charges

Understand import VAT, IOSS and customs charges before ordering internationally.

Who this applies to

This article is for customers ordering from Rough Trade where the item is being shipped across a customs border.

Rough Trade products may ship from the UK, Germany or the US. The ship-from location and available shipping options are shown at checkout. If your order contains items shipping from different locations, they may be sent separately and separate shipping costs may apply.

Check where your order ships from

Before placing your order, check the shipping information at checkout. This is the best place to confirm:

  • where each item is shipping from

  • the shipping cost for each shipment

  • whether the order may cross a customs border

  • whether import VAT, customs duty or handling fees may apply

Customs rules depend on the destination country, the ship-from country, the value of the goods and the shipping option used.

EU orders and IOSS

For eligible EU orders valued at €150 or less and imported from outside the EU, Rough Trade may collect VAT at checkout through the Import One Stop Shop, known as IOSS.

Our IOSS number is: DE362354813

Some local customs systems may ask you to provide this number before releasing your parcel. This helps confirm that VAT has already been handled through IOSS.

IOSS only covers import VAT for eligible low-value orders. It does not guarantee that no other customs duty, carrier handling fee or local charge will ever apply.

From 1 July 2026, the EU is introducing a temporary €3 customs duty per item on low-value consignments up to €150 imported from outside the EU. This means some EU customers may see customs-related charges even where VAT has been collected correctly.

What may happen by region

EU customers

If your order ships from within the EU, import charges are less likely to apply.

If your order ships from outside the EU, import VAT, customs duty or carrier handling fees may apply depending on the order value and local customs rules. For eligible orders up to €150, IOSS may be used to collect VAT at checkout.

UK customers

If your order ships from outside the UK, UK import rules may apply.

For goods worth £135 or less, VAT is usually included in the price you paid to the seller. For goods worth more than £135, VAT and customs duty may be collected by the delivery company before delivery or collection.

US customers

If your order ships to the US from another country, customs duties, taxes or handling fees may apply. US customs rules changed in 2025, so customers should not assume that orders under $800 will always enter duty-free.

If you are asked to pay a customs or VAT charge

If you are asked to pay a charge and believe VAT was already collected at checkout:

  1. Check your order confirmation and shipping email.

  2. Confirm where the item shipped from.

  3. If you are in the EU and the order is eligible for IOSS, provide our IOSS number: DE362354813.

  4. Keep a copy of any customs notice, payment request or receipt.

  5. Contact us by online chat with your order number and a photo or copy of the charge notice.

We can review the order details and help confirm what information was supplied with the shipment.
